Brett Landscaping brings contemporary style to Kirkby with Piatto paving

The town centre of Kirkby-in-Ashfield, in Nottinghamshire, has been revitalised to create a contemporary modern aesthetic using beautiful Piatto modular paving from Brett Landscaping.

Produced using natural aggregates to provide a colourfast surface, 500m² of Piatto has been supplied to Ashfield District Council by Brett Landscaping and has succeeded in transforming a pedestrianised scheme originally laid during the 1990s.

The durable, naturally coloured Piatto has been used to successfully resurface the entire length of the high street and transform an underused street market area into an inviting space for public events.  This area has become a “paving” canvas for the installation of specially commissioned artwork pieces and sculptures, as well as playing host to a celebration of local heritage and sporting heroes, adding to the community appeal of the revived town centre.

The redevelopment was required due to the town centre becoming dated and areas of paving being damaged by regular deliveries to retail units.  As a result the paving was in significant need of replacement and its renovation was included in a wider regeneration scheme carried out by the Council.

Carol Cooper-Smith, Interim Service Director, Economy, from Ashfield District Council, oversaw the scheme and explains more about what she and her team were hoping to achieve:

“With the Kirkby-in-Ashfield rejuvenation project, we were looking to install modern, pedestrianised paving, using clean lines and a range of different aggregate materials to distinguish between solely pedestrianised zones and areas of space that could be shared during permitted servicing hours.

“To accomplish this we needed a supply of paving materials that, while being durable enough for a commercial project, would also allow for visual creativity, flexible installation, patterning, and the creation of an overall aesthetic that would significantly enhance the town centre’s atmosphere.”

After embarking on a web-based product search to identify paving products capable of achieving these qualities, Carol and her team came across Brett Landscaping and their range of high quality paving materials which they manufacture and supply.

“We found that the materials created by Brett Landscaping, specifically the Piatto range, gave us the most options to create different aesthetics in different areas.  This allowed us to add emphasis, whilst at the same time complementing existing materials that we weren’t planning to change.

“Furthermore, these products, while highly attractive, were also clearly robust, easy to maintain and resistant to staining - essential for a public area where we planned to hold street markets and local events.”

She explains that the products supplied by Brett Landscaping, combined with the additional adaptations within the public space, the innovative inclusion of further materials and the decluttering process of the pedestrianised area’s dated street furniture, has achieved a truly successful transformation. It has also brought a modern ambiance and enticing feel to the area which now plays host to a re-vamped market amenity which has been designed to host temporary pop-up stalls, as opposed to empty, permanent stalls; a concept which has already proved successful in achieving greater market stall take-up.

The project has run smoothly, and Carol has been impressed with the excellent customer support service provided by Brett Landscaping, from product test data and installation through to ongoing maintenance requirements for the paving.

Now completed, Carol gives her opinion on the ‘before’ and ‘after’ aesthetic, saying: “Prior to the Brett Landscaping paving installation, the town centre public space looked tired, worn and uncared for.  Following the improvements it feels like a new place with a fresh energy.”

Andrew Gill, Marketing Manager at Brett Landscaping is pleased to hear that the installation of Piatto products has been so successful, delivering aesthetically impressive results and reviving a public area for future generations. He said:

“Well-designed, high quality, hard landscaping can be extremely effective in turning areas in need of regeneration around.

“At Brett Landscaping, we pride ourselves on having the ability to design and manufacture commercial paving products that give scope for creativity, enabling real hard landscaping design to come to the fore so public areas can be dramatically improved, now and for many years to come.”
